Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their progress".
Summers, who once headed Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages demonstrated that Summers communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted Summers' choice to depart.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," the company remarked.
Political Context
This news comes after the two houses of Congress decided on recently to pass a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its records on the case.
The bill will afterward move to the desk of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he plans to endorse the legislation, after changing his view on the issue following objections from his base.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced several high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails revealed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with he often seeking to introduce the academic to prominent international personalities.
Personal Response
After the messages were released with the general audience, he expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and mend relationships with the individuals closest to me".
Professional History
Summers occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public roles recently on Monday, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following his announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in the capital where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was not affiliated with the institution.
He joined the board of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
