Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Leader Departs Following Pivot Towards Fried Chicken.
The head of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the company into poultry items has been removed after tensions with its board.
Leadership Transition
Andrew Rennie is exiting after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a new leader.
Rennie, who was with the company for over 20 years, had sought to shift Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, commenting in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted chicken was the quickest rising protein in the international market.
Governance Friction
Sources suggest that there was friction between the CEO and the governance team over his approach and management style, although Domino's official statement said he was departing “as a joint decision”.
Recent Product Launch
In the autumn, Domino's introduced its poultry product line – which the former chief described as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is trialling it in over 200 locations in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the firm is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as planned, it views chicken products as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.
Leadership Statement
Ian Bull, the company chair, stated: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to drive further growth and profitability in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on identifying the ideal CEO to oversee the careful implementation of that growth strategy.”
Industry Challenges
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said transactions fell by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In August, it warned that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the run-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for below-target performance and a 15% drop in half-year profits.
Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut announced the closure of dozens of outlets a last month, after the business behind its UK venues entered insolvency.
Wellness Efforts
Adapting to customer preferences towards better nutrition, the company has rolled out light items, such as its thin-crust range of bakes below 400 calories as well as meat-free and gluten-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 kcals. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Management
The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the gaming group William Hill. It is believed that she prefers not to assume the top job permanently.
She said: “The company has a multiple ongoing development and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on carrying out at pace.”
Frampton noted these comprised ongoing development on the company's supply chain and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.
Domino's is also without a permanent CFO until the spring, when Andrea starts from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Snow serves as interim finance chief.
