Greenlandic Women Claim Legal Victory in Fight against the Danish State regarding Coerced IUD Affair.
Victims from a historical program where thousands comprising Greenlandic females, some minors were forcibly fitted with contraceptive coils absent informed permission are declaring victory in their court battle with the Danish government.
Officials have announced that they will be entitled to compensation via a settlement package.
Government Settlement Finalized
Folketinget, along with the government, reached an agreement granting an estimated 4,500 Greenlandic women the right to seek kr. 300,000 (ÂŁ35,000) each.
This announcement comes after a lengthy battle by a group of women that initiated legal proceedings demanding compensation for the pain and suffering they experienced, arguing it constituted a violation of their personal rights.
Historical Background
The Danish state ruled the territory under colonial rule for decades maintaining authority over the island's healthcare system into the late 20th century.
Earlier this year, following a long period where it did not acknowledge the violations, Denmark made an official apology. The prime minister apologized for the “systemic discrimination” against women and girls within the Danish healthcare system.
“These actions caused major consequences for the affected women who suffered both bodily and psychological harm,” stated the senior official.
Compensation Process Details
Authorities clarified those who were given the procedure without their knowledge or consent during a thirty-one year period can apply for compensation starting next year. Relevant legislation is set to be enacted in June.
Based on results of an independent inquiry of contraceptive practices from that era, an estimated four and a half thousand individuals may be entitled to the fund.
For eligibility, the women must:
- Submit a “credible report” detailing what happened.
- Demonstrate they resided in Greenland throughout the specified timeframe.
- State under oath that they possessed no awareness nor gave permission for the procedure.
Perspectives from the Victims
A plaintiffs, recalling being 14 when she was instructed to go for medical attention for no clear reason, said the experience like a violation.
“Our activism as speakers and interviewees proved effective,” she stated. “We started two years ago resulting in within three years we have secured an apology plus financial acknowledgment.”
Another perspective expressed happiness, stating, “We are happy. Like my mother said: it's a victory.” While some believe the amount could have been higher, there is contentment regarding the recognition of past events.

A Greenlandic minister described the settlement as “long overdue”. Stating clearly, “It is not primarily financial. It is about recognition of the injury and its very severe implications.”
A Danish cabinet member acknowledged these events represent a “dark chapter within the shared history”, noting that compensation “will not erase the suffering from the women” yet it “serves to recognize and express regret over the experiences.”
