A Simple Declaration or Merely Out of Touch? The Hue Named 'Cloud Dancer' Chosen as Pantone's 2026 Colour.

Greetings! I can't wait to learn what color is set to be 2026. What's the scoop?

Get ready, because every year since 1999, Pantone chooses a signature color. This selection is a reflection of the zeitgeist—shaping everything from our emotions and what we wear to how we design our living spaces. 2025's hue was the rich tan "a coffee-inspired shade," preceded by the subtly inviting "a fuzzy pastel."

This year's choice, however, is particularly baffling. It is "Cloud Dancer," described by a "soft and structural white."

Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … allowing all colors to be highlighted."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… hold on, just white? Is this a prank? Is white even a proper color?

Can you even describe the hue of a cloud? Milk? While some consider white as a color, every hue is at its core a range of visible light. It appears in a set of colored pencils, so I'd argue the answer is yes.

The question of whether Pantone is pulling our leg is trickier to figure out. According to their release, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, isn't overstimulating, embodies understated style, and exudes refined calm.

The public reaction, however, has proven more critical. A number of observers have accused Pantone of being completely "tone-deaf." Trend analyst Mandy Lee labeled it "underwhelming." Critics have drawn parallels to subtle advocacy of problematic concepts seen in other media.

I see, one would hope they're blissfully unaware that now is a sensitive time to be pointedly celebrating whiteness... So, how should I who doesn't follow a catwalk use this news in everyday routine? I just painted my ceiling with white, does that count?

That definitely qualifies. This applies equally to your wireless speakers, bathtub, or linen sheets.

It's interesting you mention fashion shows, because many this season's presentations have been bold and fuzzy, featuring naturally dyed feathers on the stage.

White ensembles made appearances, as always, in designer collections—from structured tops to collared dresses. Well-known individuals have also been seen in crisp all-white ensembles at prestigious shows.

The positive takeaway is: chances are you already own pieces in this "understated" color of the year. As Pressman, Cloud Dancer "embodies a more sustainable choice for the eco-conscious," which could mean not having to buy new items at all.

AT LAST, a design directive for the deeply unmotivated. A blank page, if you will. A haven of calming neutrality against the clutter. I'm convinced, I get it. Are you planning a all-white theme for your closet?

Absolutely not. Have you ever tried to clean tomato sauce stains from a light garment? I don't need additional cleaning headaches in 2026.

I do possess a pair of now off-white comfort shoes, and those never go out of style.
